Discovered at a young age and active throughout his adult life,  Ammons (also sometimes referred to as "Jug") played with all of the mid-century greats and released a total of 47 albums, sometime as Jug, sometimes as the Boss, sometimes as himself.

His influence on music has been widespread effecting not only jazz but also pop and orchestral music.  He is considered to have co-founded the Chicago style of saxophone.

Ammons died of cancer in 1974.
